Newcastle today fired off their final parting shot at dissenting Frenchman Laurent Robert by fining him two weeks’ wages after the player launched a furious broadside at manager Graeme Souness.

The 30-year-old Frenchman, who remains a Magpies’ player until his move to Portsmouth comes into force on Friday, was punished over scathing comments published today.

“Newcastle United today fined Laurent Robert two weeks’ wages for a breach of club discipline,” the club announced on their website, www.nufc.co.uk.

“It follows a newspaper article containing comments attributed to the Frenchman criticising Magpies manager Graeme Souness.

“Both the player and Portsmouth, where Robert will play next season, will be notified of the decision.”
