United confirm Park deal
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson today completed his second signing of the summer following confirmation he has captured South Korea midfielder Park Ji-Sung.
United are believed to have paid PSV Eindhoven £4million for the energetic 24-year-old, who was a major influence behind his country’s run to the World Cup semi-finals three years ago and the Dutch club’s charge to the Champions League semi-finals last season.
Park had been happy with life in Holland but had no hesitation in accepting the offer of a move to the Barclays Premiership once Ferguson had made an initial approach.
The deal is subject to Park passing a medical and he is due in London later today to complete the examination. He will also require a work permit but as a regular member of the South Korean national side this appears to be an academic process.
Park will return to the Far East once his medical is complete before coming back to England to link up with his new team-mates for the first time at the beginning of next month.
He will then almost certainly be named in the United squad to travel to the Far East for a four-match tour at the end of July. The tour includes visits to Hong Kong, China and Japan.
Though Red Devils officials have stressed Park’s arrival is based purely on his ability as a footballer, the commercial impact of his arrival at Old Trafford cannot be underestimated.
