Wigan won't move for Carroll - Jewell

Paul Jewell does not expect to sign Roy Carroll because he believes the Northern Ireland goalkeeper’s wage demands would prove too expensive for Wigan.

The Latics boss revealed he is looking to bring another keeper to the JJB Stadium during the close season but Carroll, released by Manchester United on Friday, is not on Jewell’s shopping list.

“There’s no truth whatsoever in those stories,” Jewell told PA Sport. “Roy Carroll is a very good keeper, but if he turned down £20,000 (€29,530) a week at Manchester United it’s hardly likely that he will be coming here.

“But I am looking to bring in another keeper. John Filan will be our number one, but we need to strengthen in that area.”

Carroll is understood to have turned down the offer of a new deal at Old Trafford after being told he could not be guaranteed first-team football. The 27-year-old was signed by Wigan from Hull for in April 1997 before moving onto Manchester United in July 2001.
