Birmingham striker Emile Heskey scored a first-half goal to stun Goodison Park and threatened to hold up Everton’s drive to Europe.

The former Liverpool man scored with an excellent shot on the turn after just five minutes, a 25-yard effort that beat Nigel Martyn’s dive and nestled in the bottom corner.

From then on it was a very physical battle with referee Andy D’Urso struggling to kept control of the match.
