Worthington's men have fighting chance

Nigel Worthington maintained there was a lot of hard work still ahead after watching his relegation battlers pull off a dramatic stoppage-time win over Newcastle at Carrow Road.

Substitute Patrick Kluivert looked to have denied the hosts a precious victory in their battle to beat the drop with a last-gasp effort, which had cancelled out a stunning 35-yard strike from Youssef Safri midway through the second half.

But with four minutes added on, there proved to be yet another twist when Thomas Helveg swung over a deep cross into the Newcastle box from the right, where record signing Dean Ashton timed his jump to perfection and guided the ball past Shay Given for his fourth goal in three games as Carrow Road erupted.

Norwich remain bottom because of their terrible goal difference, but are now level with Crystal Palace, who were beaten last night, and within two points of 17th-placed West Brom.

“The job is nowhere near complete,” insisted the Canaries manager. “But the one thing I can tell you is we will keep fighting and scratching away for every single point we can get.

“We have got a lot to do – we are level with Palace now, but still down on the bottom now by goal difference.”
