Everton close in on European place
Everton are on the brink of European qualification for the first time in a decade after their momentous win over Manchester United at Goodison Park last night.
The crucial goal came from Duncan Ferguson, who stooped in the second half to head the winner to leave the Toffeemen needing one more win to almost guarantee UEFA Cup qualification.
Ironically, Ferguson also scored the winner a decade ago in Everton’s last victory over United before yesterday’s triumph.
But the Champions League is the real prize for manager David Moyes, and Everton remain in the driving seat despite Liverpool winning at Portsmouth. Everton still hold a three-point advantage and have a game in hand over their local rivals.
Moyes said: “Another couple of wins and the clubs around us will start to run out of games.”
But the fact United finished with nine men – after Gary Neville and Paul Scholes were sent off in the second half – will dominate the post-match assessments.
