Poilce to probe Bowyer v Dyer brawl
Police are to investigate the brawl between Newcastle stars Lee Bowyer and Keiron Dyer, it was announced today.
The fight between the England players, which was witnessed by 52,000 fans gathered at St James’ Park on Saturday for the Magpies’ clash with Aston Villa, will be examined by senior police officers.
Talks are under way between Northumbria Police and Newcastle and a force spokesman confirmed no official complaint had been made but officers have received “concerns” from members of the public.
A force spokesman said in a statement today: “Northumbria Police never condones or ignores violence wherever it happens.
“A senior officer from Newcastle area command has been assigned to investigate the circumstances of this incident. That officer’s report will consider whether or not further police action is required and whether any offences have been committed.
“The football club is co-operating fully with our inquiries, which are expected to take some time.
“While initially we have not received any complaints arising from this incident we have now had concerns expressed by members of the public and those will form part of inquiries.
“We will not be making any further comments until our inquiries are concluded and a course of action has been agreed.”
England midfielder Bowyer has already been fined around £200,000 (€292,000) by Newcastle - a club record amounting to six weeks’ wages – for the incident on Saturday.
Bowyer, 28, was also severely censured and warned about his future conduct.
The punishment follows his clash with Dyer towards the end of the 3-0 home defeat by Aston Villa.
