Shearer to play on

Alan Shearer today confirmed he will postpone his retirement and spend one last season trying to win silverware for his beloved Newcastle.

The Magpies captain has insisted all season he would not change his mind but manager Graeme Souness’ persistence has finally paid off with Shearer having a change of heart and agreeing to a one-year extension.

And Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd told a St James’ Park press conference: “I think Alan’s new contract will read player-coach.”

Shearer will now have more time to target Jackie Milburn’s record as the club’s all-time leading goalscorer.

Shearer, 35, needs only 10 goals to surpass Milburn’s record of 200 and the Magpies are still in the FA Cup and UEFA Cup so it is possible for him to achieve the feat this season.

Shepherd added: "It's the news every fan wanted to hear and certainly the news Graeme and the board wanted to hear."

Shearer revealed Newcastle’s recent form had played a big part in his decision.
