Molloy gets Rovers captaincy

Trevor Molloy has been named Shamrock Rovers captain for the new season.

The 27-year-old returned to Rovers in 2002 after spells with Athlone Town, St Patrick’s Athletic, Bohemians, Shelbourne and Carlisle United, and quickly became a big fans’ favourite with his all-round displays.

A lifelong Rovers fan, Molloy was one of the few good points for the Hoops last season as he bagged six goals and created countless others on his way to winning May’s Player of the Month Award.

He was given the captain’s armband towards the end of last season in the absence of Terry Palmer and has been handed the honour full-time following Palmer’s exit from the club.

“Getting the Rovers captaincy is one of the things I have always wanted to do as a player. It tops any of the medals I have won in the game.

“It is a strange one for me to get used to. I’m 28 soon so I suppose it’s time to be the one with a bit of responsibility.”
