Newcastle boss Graeme Souness made four changes to the side which defeated Chelsea 1-0 at the weekend as he attempted to book a place in the last 16 of the UEFA Cup against Heerenveen.

With Jean-Alain Boumsong ineligible and Celestine Babayaro suffering from flu, Souness drafted Andy O’Brien and Aaron Hughes into his defence, while there were changes too further up the field.

Amdy Faye returned from his domestic suspension in place of the rested Jermaine Jenas in midfield, while Shola Ameobi got the nod upfront alongside skipper Alan Shearer after Patrick Kluivert was sidelined by illness.

Heerenveen boss Gertjan Verbeek made only one change to the eleven which started the 2-1 defeat at the Abe Lenstra Stadium in the first leg last week as Polish midfielder Arek Radomski came in for Thomas Prager.
