Magpies Cup tie gets go-ahead

Newcastle’s FA Cup fifth-round clash with Chelsea will go ahead this afternoon unless there are further heavy snowfalls on Tyneside.

Match referee Mark Halsey gave the go-ahead after a morning pitch inspection at St James’ Park following overnight snow.

Groundstaff worked to clear the pitch before the inspection and Halsey gave the go-ahead for the 4pm kick-off shortly after 11am.

“Provided there are no further heavy snowfalls, it’s on,” said a club spokesman.
