Svensson set to rejoin Elfsborg
Southampton’s Sweden midfielder Anders Svensson looks set to return to his old club Elfsborg at the end of the season.
Reports in Sweden, for whom Svensson was booked in a 1-1 draw with France in Paris last night, claim he has agreed a pre-contract document with Elfsborg starting in June – when his deal with Saints expires.
Svensson recently described himself as “confused” by Harry Redknapp’s decision to change a winning line-up against Portsmouth and Liverpool for the 2-1 defeat at Birmingham a few days later.
The Swede was left out after playing a key role in the two previous games and is believed to have asked to see the manager about being dropped back on to the bench.
It is likely Svensson will return to Elfsborg on free transfer – although Southampton may receive a nominal fee.
Redknapp is well-stocked with midfielders, meanwhile – having signed his son Jamie from Tottenham among five new players in the January window and seen Graeme Le Saux and Matthew Oakley make giant strides back to full fitness.
Henri Kamara, who has scored twice in two games since switching from Celtic to St Mary’s, was booked last night as his Senegal team went down 1-0 to a late Geremi winner for Cameroon.
Promising young Saints striker Kenwyne Jones could not save Trinidad and Tobago from a 2-1 defeat by USA in a World Cup qualifier in Port of Spain.
