Curbishley wants more TV cash

Charlton boss Alan Curbishley has advocated a more even distribution of television money so the Premiership can remain competitive.

The Addicks manager believes a more equal apportioning of funds would see the strengthening of clubs like Charlton, who would then present more of a challenge to Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United.

At the moment, half is divided equally, a quarter is shared out according to final league placings and the rest is allocated according to appearances on television.

“We are not booked in for another live game this season,” Curbishley told the Daily Telegraph.

“As things stand, we won’t be getting any more TV money. Liverpool will have been four times over Christmas. That’s another couple of million quid in their coffers.

“If you give the likes of Charlton a bit more money up front we could make our team stronger and we might be able to gatecrash one or two parties.”

Curbishley was speaking after Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson spoke of the “mundane” nature of some Premiership ties.

Unlike the time of the Premiership’s inception, many results are predictable leading to a lack of enthusiasm and atmosphere.

Curbishley said: “The Premiership has had a great 12 years. All around the world everyone talks about it. Foreign players want to come here. But how do we make sure that the next 10 years are just as good as the last?”
