Helguera questions Rooney temper

Real Madrid defender Ivan Helguera has added some spice to England’s clash with Spain on Wednesday by questioning Wayne Rooney’s big-match temperament.

Real Madrid defender Ivan Helguera has added some spice to England’s clash with Spain on Wednesday by questioning Wayne Rooney’s big-match temperament.

Rooney warmed up for the Bernabeu friendly with a brace of goals in Manchester United’s 3-1 win over Newcastle yesterday.

However, he has yet to convince Spanish centre-half Helguera that he has the ability to succeed at the highest level.

“Rooney has the ability and the speed – but he loses himself in his bad temper on the pitch. That is a big problem," said Helguera.

“He is a player with potential. He possesses good qualities, but he still has not won anything in the world of football.

“He is now playing for a great club in Manchester United and the media is over-promoting him. But I ask myself: ‘What trophy has Rooney won?'” quotes The Sun.

Helguera has far more respect for his Real teammates David Beckham and Michael Owen, who both shone in the Spanish side’s 6-1 win over Albacete last night.

“Beckham is key to the English team,” added Helguera. “I would prefer it if he didn’t play against Spain and if he would be in perfect physical condition for Real Madrid’s difficult game against Barcelona next Saturday.

“They will also have Michael Owen and he is a super player. He treats his teammates well and he is looking to adapt to Madrid as fast as possible.”
