Crazy Horse hailed as Anfield legend
Kenny Dalglish summed up the tributes of a whole host of former Liverpool greats when saying Emlyn Hughes will be remembered as a “true legend” of the Anfield club.
Hughes, who also captained England 23 times, winning 62 caps in total, died from a brain tumour aged 57.
He had been battling the illness for the last 15 months but deteriorated in the last few days, his wife Barbara said.
Hughes made 657 appearances for the Reds after he was signed by Bill Shankly for £65,000 (€93,500) from Blackpool in 1967 and will be honoured by the club with a minute’s silence before the Carling Cup match against Middlesbrough at Anfield tonight.
“Emlyn was an institution at Liverpool,” Dalglish told Radio Five Live. “When I arrived there he almost baby-sat me. He looked after me and on my very first evening there came in and made sure I was settled in okay.
“He epitomised everything that Shanks wanted for Liverpool and he did it in abundance.
“He will be very, very fondly remembered, and rightly so, as a true legend in the history of Liverpool Football Club.”
