Adams exit catches Wycombe by surprise

Wycombe will soon begin the search for a new manager after former Arsenal and England captain Tony Adams today quit his post for “personal reasons”.

Adams took charge of Wanderers in November last year, and they suffered relegation to League Two in his first year as manager at the Causeway Stadium.

The club are currently 17th in League Two, and Adams has decided to hand in his resignation, although surprised Wycombe officials claimed this afternoon that he had yet to formally instruct them of his intention.

“I would like to thank everybody connected with Wycombe Wanderers Football Club for the time I have spent with them. It has been a good experience and an education,” said Adams in a statement released by his representatives.

“However it is with regret that I resign from the post of manager due to personal reasons.

“I believe the team is in early development and it saddens me to have to leave before finishing the job I started.

“I am sure (head coach) Pete (Cawley) and the players can continue with their good work and achieve all the success that they are worth and is their due.”

Peterborough have appointed their former player Jimmy Quinn as assistant manager to Barry Fry.

The former Northern Ireland international resigned as Shrewsbury boss last month following a disappointing start to the campaign, after guiding them back into the Football League at the first attempt.

Fry told www.theposh.com: “I am sure he will have a big impact both on and off the field.”

Sheffield United manager Neil Warnock has requested a personal hearing after being charged by the Football Association with using abusive and/or insulting words to a match official.

The charge relates to an incident during the Carling Cup clash against Watford on October 26, which saw Warnock banished from the touchline in the last minute.

Warnock said: “I’ve been charged and I’ve requested a personal hearing. I’ve no comment to make ahead of the hearing.”

Brighton midfielder John Piercy has been forced to retire from professional football due to the stomach illness colitis – just three days after the 26-year-old made his first Championship start of the season.

Caretaker Notts County boss Ian Richardson has taken David Pipe, Matthew Gill and Mike Whitlow off the transfer list.

The trio had been listed and accused of lacking commitment by former boss Gary Mills in the aftermath of a woeful performance and 3-1 defeat at neighbours Mansfield last month.

Colchester and Blackpool have both been fined by the Football Association for their part in angry and disorderly scenes during last month’s League One clash at Bloomfield Road.

Colchester were fined £6,000 (€8,600) for their involvement while Blackpool were ordered to pay £5,000 (€7,200).

Colchester chief executive Marie Partner said: “We asked for the good behaviour of the club in the past to be taken into account and for the FA to be a bit lenient considering the maximum fine they could have imposed is £25,000 (€36,000).”

QPR striker Tony Thorpe will be out of action for six weeks after suffering a knee injury in Saturday’s defeat at West Ham.

Thorpe tore medial ligaments in his knee following a challenge with Hammers defender Tomas Repka which forced him off after 29 minutes.

League One club Doncaster Rovers have placed “surplus to requirements” defender Dave Mulligan on the transfer list.

Rovers have also made a formal complaint to the Football League about the performance of referee Chris Foy during their 2-1 defeat at Hartlepool at the weekend.

Hartlepool have taken Swedish striker Ollie Kullinger on trial as manager Neale Cooper attempts to bolster his attacking options.

Cambridge striker Dan Chillingworth has handed in a transfer request after becoming frustrated at a lack of first-team opportunities.

Meanwhile, 20-year-old former Ipswich defender Matthew Robinson has agreed to stay at the Abbey Stadium on non-contract terms.

Bury manager Graham Barrow has turned to his family in bid to bolster his meagre squad, promoting 18-year-old son Jason to the first-team squad.

Brian Laws has received a formal apology from Grimsby Town after a small section of Mariners fans aimed abuse at the Scunthorpe manager during the weekend derby at Glanford Park.

Mansfield defender Scott McNiven, 26, has undergone surgery after being diagnosed as suffering testicular cancer.

He discovered last week that surgery was needed but nevertheless played the full 90 minutes of Saturday’s 1-0 home defeat to Macclesfield, and after having the tumour removed is now waiting for results of a biopsy.
