Carroll to earn first-team spot

Roy Carroll is hoping another Champions League shut-out against Sparta Prague on Wednesday will help stave off the renewed threat to his Manchester United place from Tim Howard.

Tuesday’s Carling Cup win over Crewe excepted, the Northern Ireland international is currently in his longest run of appearances for the Red Devils since he signed from Wigan for £1m (€1.4m) in 2001.
