Newcastle midfielder Jermaine Jenas was today handed his first England start as the replacement for suspended captain David Beckham in Azerbaijan.

Jenas, who has previously made just seven substitute appearances, was on the right side of a midfield trio as manager Sven-Goran Eriksson kept faith with his three-pronged attack.

That meant Jermain Defoe keeping his place up front alongside Michael Owen, with Wayne Rooney tucked in behind.

England (v Azerbaijan): Robinson, G Neville, A Cole, Butt, Ferdinand, Campbell, Jenas, Lampard, Rooney, Owen, Defoe. Subs: King, James, Terry, Hargreaves, J Cole, Wright-Phillips, Smith.
