The England striker, who has recovered from a foot injury, is poised to launch his United career in the European encounter at some point in the match.

“I am just mulling over whether to start him or put him on the bench,” said Ferguson. “Maybe putting him on the bench would be the fairest thing to do. Nonetheless he is going to be involved.”

Ferguson revealed that Paul Scholes, who missed the win at Tottenham because of a groin strain, will be sidelined for two weeks.

Provisional squad: Carroll, Brown, Ferdinand, Silvestre, Heinze, Ronaldo, Keane, O’Shea, Giggs, Smith, Van Nistelrooy, Rooney, Ricardo, Bellion, P Neville, Kleberson, Miller, Richardson, Fletcher.
