Alan Shearer was credited with the stoppage time goal that gave Newcastle an interval lead in Graeme Souness’ first outing as ‘Toon Army’ chief but even the goal-hungry England striker will have a tough job persuading anybody it was not an own-goal by Southampton’s David Prutton.

Shearer, recalled to the starting line-up in a string of changes after a midweek UEFA Cup rest on the sub’s bench, did well to blast the ball back into the six-yard box after Patrick Kluivert missed Craig Bellamy’s initial low cross.

But even though it may well have crossed the line eventually, Prutton clearly stabbed it into the net in attempting to clear.
