Hoops out of FAI Cup

Shane Barrett hit an extra-time winner to put holders Longford deservedly into the quarter-finals of the FAI Carlsberg Cup.

Barrett headed home Dessie Baker’s corner on 116 minutes for the only goal of a game in which both sides finished with ten men.

Despite Longford having most of the possession, it was Rovers who had the first real chance on 62 minutes.

Stephen Grant raced away on the counter to crack a shot off a post with Trevor Molloy’s follow-up being cleared off the line by Barry Ferguson.

A red card for Rovers’ Steve Gough for an elbow on Dessie Baker on 81 minutes gave Town the initiative.

Town then also had Alan Murphy sent off nine minutes into extra time for dissent towards referee Alan Kelly.
