Kaviedes signs up as Johnson stays on

Crystal Palace have completed the signing of striker Ivan Kaviedes and agreed a new contract with last season’s top goalscorer Andrew Johnson.

Ecuador international Kaviedes has joined from Barcelona de Guayaquil in a deal which will be worth £2m (€3m) to his former club.

The striker has been on trial with the club and has impressed the management team.

Manager Iain Dowie told his club’s official website, www.cpfc.co.uk: “He is an icon in Ecuadorian football, he’s an outstanding footballer.

“He’s come on trial here and he’s shown good motivation in training. He’s been a breath of fresh air.

“He’s an outstanding finisher and free-kick specialist.”

International clearance has been received and Kaviedes is available for selection in Saturday’s Barclays Premiership match against Everton at Selhurst Park.

Johnson, who scored in the league opener at Norwich on Saturday, has agreed a new five year contract with the Eagles.

The 23-year-old, the leading scorer in Nationwide Division One, scored his 47th goal in an Eagles shirt at Carrow Road.

Chairman Simon Jordan said: “Andy has done very well for this club and I am delighted we have agreed this new contract.

“Andy is the complete professional and has all the qualities that I expect from a modern-day player.

“Iain Dowie has seen the striker in form ever since he joined the club last December and has no doubts about his importance to the team.

“I am really pleased he has agreed the new contract – he has always intimated that he wanted to play for me and whatever happens this or next year he would like to be a part of Crystal Palace’s future.

“With the length of this contract you can understand his commitment to the club.”
