Helveg keeps Canaries waiting

Danish international Thomas Helveg will take his time before deciding whether to join Barclays Premiership newcomers Norwich.

The veteran wing-back, 33, featured in every game of his country’s Euro 2004 campaign and is available on a free transfer after leaving Italian giants Inter Milan.

Helveg was in Norwich earlier this week to discuss the possibility of a switch to England, but admitted he intends to keep his options open.

“I am looking for a new contract and have been with Norwich,” he said in Danish national newspaper Ekstra Bladet.

“The club are certainly interested in a deal, otherwise they would not have made it public.

“I will see what the possibilities are and then find out whether we can do a contract.

“There are several possibilities for me and all I want to say at the moment is that I will be continuing my career in Europe next season.”

Several other English top-flight clubs, believed to include Everton, Manchester City and Tottenham, are reported to be keeping tabs on developments.

And Norwich manager Nigel Worthington knows just what a valuable asset Helveg would be as he looks to give last season’s First Division champions an extended stay in the Premier League.

“He’s a very, very experienced player – and a very good player – who would be an excellent addition to the group of players that we’ve already got here,” said Worthington in the Norwich Evening News.

The Norwich manager has, meanwhile, not yet given up on bringing Portsmouth defender Linvoy Primus to Carrow Road.

“It’s ongoing,” he said. “We’re still trying to nail that one down. We’ve just got to be patient.”
