Robson hits out at Ricardo's antics

Former England manager Bobby Robson has criticised Portugal goalkeeper Ricardo for play-acting in his side’s 2-1 win over Holland in the Euro 2004 semi-final last night.

Robson, writing for O Jogo newspaper, hailed the Portuguese performance at Lisbon’s Estadio Jose Alvalade but criticised the Sporting Lisbon goalkeeper in his comments.

The Newcastle United boss wrote: “I have to say it, I am sorry but I have to say it: I did not like Ricardo yesterday.

“He has to decide if he wants to be a goalkeeper or an actor. It’s shameful to try and fool everyone and pretend you have non-existent injuries.

“The referee gave four minutes of stoppage time but it could have been two or three more because of the time Ricardo wasted and that could have been crucial.”

Robson was very impressed by the Portuguese performance against the Dutch, however, and singled out Luis Figo and Maniche for praise.

“Figo was without doubt the man of the match,” wrote Robson. “He had to be and he knew it after the scene he made after he was substituted against England.

“But Figo is a great player and reacted well. I loved Maniche too who wore his heart on his sleeve, had a great match and scored an even better goal.”
