Axed Queiroz supported by Figo
Former Real Madrid coach Carlos Queiroz has reacted swiftly to stinging criticism from club president Florentino Perez who implied he lost his job due to his lack of authority.
Perez announced Queiroz’s sacking on Monday, insisting the Portuguese coach was leaving the Santiago Bernabeu by “mutual agreement” and announcing he would be replaced by club legend Jose Antonio Camacho.
“I am very sad with the decision that has been taken. I think and feel that it is unfair, but I have to accept it,” Queiroz told Marca.
“I have a real feeling of sadness that I can’t hide. I would like to carry on coaching, it is my life, but the future is in God’s hands and only he knows what will happen.”
Queiroz will surely take comfort from the words of Luis Figo, who leapt to the defence of his countryman.
“The coach did all he could do with what they gave him to win,” said Figo.
“He came here with the (Far East) tour already arranged, players left the team and none came to replace them. Queiroz worked with a professional attitude and with effort.
“After that, if you win or not is down to circumstances.”
