Jermain Defoe could have been the “wildcard” to ignite England’s European Championship campaign in Portugal, according to former English team boss Graham Taylor.

The young Tottenham striker has not been included in Sven-Goran Eriksson’s 23-man England squad for this summer’s European Championships and instead has been put on stand-by.
