FIFA World Club tournament planned for 2005

The Toyota Cup is to be replaced by the FIFA Club World Championship from 2005.

The Toyota Cup – also known as the Intercontinental Cup – traditionally saw the European Champions League winners take on the South American Copa Libertadores winners in a one-off match but the new championship will take on a six-team format.

The competition will be made up of the champions from the six FIFA confederations who will play a total of seven matches over an eight-day period.

The tournament will take place every year and have annual prize money of around £10m (€14.73m) with regulations being amended to stipulate that those teams qualifying for the Club World Championship must take part.

FIFA have also decided to create a club football task force to work alongside the confederations and the relevant football associations in case any problems arise with the teams participating in the tournament.

The competition will be next held in Tokyo between December 11-18, 2005.
