Sunderland manager Mick McCarthy insists he is not a bit surprised that his side is in contention for promotion back to the Barclaycard Premiership at the first attempt.

The Black Cats were plunged deep into crisis at the end of last season when, just nine games – and nine defeats – into the new manager’s reign, they slipped out of the top flight in inglorious style amid crippling financial problems.
