Chelsea manager Claudio Ranieri defended his decision to once again make sweeping changes as his side crashed 3-2 at Aston Villa to put their hopes of an automatic Champions League spot in jeopardy.

Ranieri made eight alterations from the starting line-up in Saturday’s goalless draw with Middlesbrough as he lived up to his name of ‘The Tinkerman’.
