Manchester United chief executive David Gill today welcomed his club’s half-year financial results as a “strong performance during a difficult period on and off the pitch”.

Gill took note of factors such as manager Alex Ferguson’s dispute with shareholders John Magnier and JP McManus as well as the furore over the eight-month ban for United’s England defender Rio Ferdinand for missing a drugs test.
