Robinson deal on hold as Spurs chase Defoe

Paul Robinson’s proposed move to Spurs appears unlikely to go through before today’s 5pm transfer deadline as Spurs may not be chasing Jermain Defoe.

The White Hart Lane club were apparently due to give Leeds a £2m (€2.92m) down-payment now, with a further payment due in the summer when the England international would complete the move.

Tottenham were understood to be willing to allow Robinson to stay with Leeds for the final 15 matches of the season to aid United in their bid to avoid relegation.

But Spurs have instead turned their attentions to pushing through a deal for West Ham’s Jermain Defoe, with the striker seemingly joining Tottenham for around £7m (€10.2m), with Bobby Zamora moving in the opposite direction.

One player who has left Leeds is striker Michael Bridges, who has moved to Newcastle on loan for the rest of the season, and would appear to have played his last game for the club.

Bridges was an instant hit upon his arrival from Sunderland in the summer of 1999, scoring 21 goals before serious knee ligament and ankle injuries took their toll.

Bridges, whose last top-flight goal was almost four years ago, is out of contract in the summer and it is unlikely he will have his deal renewed.

Leeds have at least made one new signing, with Magpies defender Stephen Caldwell joining the Whites on loan until the end of the campaign.

Leeds had hoped to sign striker Lomana LuaLua but the Congo international has opted to switch to Portsmouth.
