Croatian striker joins Portsmouth
Anderlecht have agreed to sell Croatia striker Ivica Mornar to Portsmouth.
The south coast club have been searching for attacking reinforcements with Aiyegbeni Yakubu at the African Nations Cup with Nigeria and Teddy Sheringham currently their only fit senior forward at Fratton Park.
Pompey chairman Milan Mandaric held talks with Mornar’s father last night, and Belgian club Anderlecht today announced on their official website www.rsca.be: “The RSC Anderlecht management has reached an agreement with Premier League club Portsmouth about the immediate transfer of striker Ivica Mornar.”
No fee has been revealed as yet but Portsmouth now have until the end of the transfer window on Saturday to agree terms with the 29-year-old forward.
The statement added: “If Mornar and Portsmouth also reach an agreement the transfer can be finalised.
“Expectations are that both sides will reach an agreement soon.”
Earlier this month Anderlecht made a two-year contract offer to the player who then asked for an improved deal, which was turned down by the Brussels-based club.
Alen Augustincic, Mornar’s agent in Germany, claimed last night his client had been hot property as the end of the winter transfer window nears.
He said: “Ivica has concrete offers from the big five leagues – Italy, Spain, Germany, France and England. Some offers are for now and some are for the summer.
“Many clubs around Europe are in negotiations with him, and everything is possible.”
Portsmouth have also been chasing USA striker Landon Donovan on a loan deal if FIFA compromise over differences between the European and American transfer windows.
The 21-year-old striker is currently on loan at San Jose Earthquakes, but his parent club is Bayer Leverkusen.
