De Boer may stay on at Rangers

Rangers playmaker Ronald de Boer admits he could extend his Ibrox career beyond the end of the season.

The Holland international was set to quit Rangers when his current deal expired in the summer but he has seen what would have been his swansong season in Glasgow wrecked by injury.

De Boer has been sidelined for the last five months with a knee injury which has required surgery and his absence has taken its toll on Rangers’ season.

The former Barcelona and Ajax star has been forced to look on as the Gers slumped out of the Champions League – without even a place in the UEFA Cup as consolation – before falling 11 points behind bitter rivals Celtic in the title race.

De Boer could return to action on Saturday against Livingston and, if all goes well for the remainder of the campaign, he insists he would be willing to consider extending his stay at Rangers.

He said: “I will make my decision a month or two before the end of the season and will take all the options into consideration – what I want, what the family wants and how I am feeling.

“These things will all determine whether I will stay or not but first of all I want to be back on the park playing again.

“Every option is still possible – including staying at Rangers.”

De Boer is aware that pressure will be on his shoulders to try and salvage what is left of a disappointing season for Rangers.

But the Dutchman has warned it could be several weeks before he is back to his best.

He added: “I’m feeling good and I hope to be involved either this coming Saturday or next Saturday.

“I’m confident I’m able to play a game but to reach a high level you have to get some games under your belt first so don’t expect miracles straightaway.

“But hopefully after a couple of games I can show the same level where I finished last year.”

De Boer added: “It’s been very frustrating – five months is a long time especially if you love the game so much and you can’t do anything.

“It’s hard but you can’t change anything. I came back as quickly as I could but I wasn’t allowed to do it any quicker.”
