Rio Ferdinand will appeal against his eight-month ban for missing a drugs test.

The Manchester United defender plans to contest the suspension imposed after he failed to attend a random drugs test at the club’s Carrington training ground in September.

Ferdinand had until Monday to file his appeal with the Football Association with the penalty due to start the day after.
