Southampton striker Kevin Phillips refused to blame the defeat at Birmingham on Gordon Strachan’s decision to stand down at the end of the season.

Saints chairman Rupert Lowe made several attempts to encourage Strachan to extend his contract, but the former Leeds midfielder is determined to take a break and honour a long-held promise to his family.
