West Brom to meet Arsenal in Carling Cup

West Brom will get the chance to add Arsenal to their growing list of Barclaycard Premiership scalps after securing a place in the quarter-finals of the Carling Cup.

Goals from Bernt Haas and substitute Scott Dobie were enough to see off a much-changed Manchester United side at The Hawthorns last night and send the Division One leaders into the last eight.

The Baggies’ reward was another plum home tie against top-flight opposition, although Gunners boss Arsene Wenger could well be tempted to field his own band of talented youngsters again, just as he did in Tuesday night’s 5-1 drubbing of Wolves at Highbury.

West Brom midfielder Andy Johnson declared: “Arsenal could probably field three teams, so whoever plays I’m sure it will be a difficult game for us.

“It is another one for our supporters to look forward to.”

Bolton dumped holders Liverpool out at Anfield last night and will host Southampton in the next round.

Youri Djorkaeff’s late penalty gave Sam Allardyce’s men a dramatic 3-2 win over Gerard Houllier’s side, while the Saints beat south-coast rivals Portsmouth on Tuesday night.

Sam Allardyce, though, is not dreaming of the final in Cardiff just yet.

He said: “Let’s not start all that talk, there is a long way to go.

“The home draw now is excellent. We can look forward to a full house at the Reebok.

“It will be a tough game, Southampton want to get to another final having reached the FA Cup final last season – but let’s hope it is our turn this time around.

“I will just be happy to get through the next round and see what happens then.”

Chelsea will travel to Villa Park for their quarter-final tie after Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink gave the Premiership leaders a 1-0 win at Reading.

Aston Villa may be struggling in the Premiership, but Blues’ boss Claudio Ranieri insisted: “There isn’t an easy match at this stage of the competition, every game is difficult.

“All that matters is that we play well.”

David O’Leary’s side, meanwhile, booked their place in the last eight with a comfortable 3-0 home win over Crystal Palace.

Helder Postiga finally opened his account following a £6.25million summer transfer from Porto as Tottenham beat Manchester City 3-1 last night.

And the White Hart Lane faithful will be looking for more of the same from the young Portugal international striker when Middlesbrough travel to north London in the fifth round.

“I am delighted for Helder,” said caretaker manager David Pleat. “He is only 20, he is in another country and he has scored a goal – he’ll grow from that.”

Postiga’s celebrations were cut short by a booking he received for removing his shirt, and Pleat joked: “He doesn’t know the rules.

“I told him not to score twice because if he removed his shirt again he would be off and it had an effect on him in the second half.”

Steve McClaren’s Boro sneaked into the last eight with a penalty shoot-out win over Everton at The Riverside, where Toffees’ youngster Leon Osman had his spot-kick saved by Mark Schwarzer.

The draw for the quarter-finals of the Carling Cup is as follows:

Bolton v Southampton

Aston Villa v Chelsea

West Brom v Arsenal

Tottenham v Middlesbrough

:: Ties to be played w/c December 15.
