Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson has defended his decision to play a much-weakened team in last night’s Carling Cup defeat to West Brom.

Ferguson’s side was virtually unrecognisable from the team which started at Chelsea last weekend, with only John O’Shea retaining his place.
