Mancini issues Veron warning

Lazio coach Roberto Mancini admits his side will have to keep a very close eye on former favourite Juan Sebastian Veron in tonight’s Champions League clash against Chelsea.

Veron has flattered to deceive since leaving Lazio for Manchester United in 2001 but Mancini is more than aware of what the Argentina midfielder is capable of.

Veron is not the only threat that Chelsea have though, according to Mancini, with Serie A exports Adrian Mutu and Hernan Crespo, formerly of Parma and Lazio respectively, also near the top of his worry-list.

“Chelsea have very good players, their attack is probably their most dangerous weapon,” Mancini said.

“We have to pay attention to Veron, who I believe is one of the best players in the world, and we will have to be particularly aware of Crespo and Mutu.

“Chelsea are very strong on the counter-attack and we cannot afford to lose the ball,” he added.

The 38-year-old also played down the loss of Dutch defender Jaap Stam, who is out of the match due to a hamstring injury.

“Although Stam will not play, we have good alternatives to replace him,” said Mancini, with Portuguese defender Fernando Couto set to play in place of the former Manchester United stopper.

Even though Lazio, who lie two points behind Group G leaders Chelsea, will be going all out for victory, Mancini still hopes to see both clubs progress through to the next phase.

“We are playing to win, we hope to play a good match,” said Mancini.

“I hope that Chelsea qualify with us, not just for the friendship I have towards their players but because they deserve it,” he added.
