Newcastle striker Craig Bellamy is out of the derby trip to Middlesbrough after failing to shake off his knee problem.

A scan has revealed no fresh damage to the injury which kept him out of Wednesday’s 1-0 UEFA Cup win in Breda and Newcastle are closely monitoring his progress in the hope there is no lasting problems.

Alan Shearer, Gary Speed, Shay Given and Aaron Hughes, who were all rested in midweek, are likely to return, as is Lee Bowyer, who was suspended for the Breda game.
