Keane and Connolly up front for Ireland

The moment of truth for Brian Kerr has finally arrived as his Republic of Ireland team line up for the make-or-break Euro 2004 qualifier against Group Ten leaders Switzerland in Basle’s St Jakob Park Stadium.

Ireland, unbeaten in nine matches under Kerr since he took charge in February, need to win the final match of the campaign to at least guarantee a place in the play-offs, although their fate would also depend on Russia’s result at home to Georgia.

Matt Holland shrugged off his temperature to captain the team in place of Kenny Cunningham, who is suspended.

John O’Shea was moved into the centre of defence with Ian Harte at left back, Colin Healy partners Holland in the centre of midfield with Damien Duff wide on the right and David Connolly alongside Robbie Keane up front. Kevin Kilbane won his 50th cap.
