Alex Ferguson was tonight charged with misconduct by the Football Association after his verbal outburst against match officials during last weekend’s victory at Newcastle.

Ferguson, who was sent to the stands during the game, faces two separate counts, one relating generally to alleged “improper conduct” and the other specifically to claims that he used abusive language to the match officials.

The Manchester United boss, who can request a personal hearing, faces either a touchline ban or a heavy fine if found guilty of misconduct.
