Houllier: Babbel can join Blackburn

Liverpool will allow Markus Babbel to join Blackburn if the German agrees terms with the Ewood Park club.

Rovers boss Graeme Souness has expressed an interest in Babbel, who is third choice at right-back this season following the arrival of Steve Finnan.

The 30-year-old has impressed Reds manager Gerard Houllier in pre-season, but would be allowed to leave in order to get first-team football.

Houllier told Liverpool's official website: "Markus has come back to his best now and I must admit I was surprised.

"He has been outstanding in pre-season but there is greater competition in defence now and I cannot guarantee him first team football. Steve Finnan's arrival from Fulham has increased our options.

"Blackburn have been in touch and are talking to his agent. If they can come to an agreement then Markus will have permission to leave."
