Howard in shock start for United
American goalkeeper Tim Howard was a shock starter for Manchester United in the Community Shield today.
He replaced Fabien Barthez, who had been expected to retain his place after playing against Sporting Lisbon in midweek.
Howard was given his chance after showing good form in America against Juventus and Barcelona.
Quinton Fortune was also in the team, getting the nod ahead of John O’Shea at left-back.
United were aiming for a change of luck in the glamour curtain-raiser to the new season.
Alex Ferguson’s side last lifted the Shield in 1997 when they defeated Chelsea on penalties.
Since then United have failed in four attempts over five seasons.
Arsenal won the trophy last year when they ovecame Liverpool.
But they went on to miss out on the prize they craved most of all – the league title.
Jens Lehmann was between the posts for the Londoners today following his move from Borussia Dortmund, while Patrick Vieira was back in his usual midfield role following a knee operation.
The sweltering heat in Cardiff was bound to test the stamina of England’s top two sides.
