Best hits out at United over Beckham treatment
Manchester United legend George Best has criticised the club over their treatment of David Beckham.
Best believes United have failed to show their superstar midfielder the respect he deserves after accepting a bid from incoming Barcelona president Joan Laporta.
Best, who during his 1960s heyday enjoyed a celebrity status similar to Beckham, said: “Beckham seems to be piggy in the middle and it is not fair to someone who has given so much loyalty to one club when loyalty is rare these days.
“He has certainly been loyal to Manchester United and I think he has been treated abysmally.”
Best feels the player, who has two years left on his Old Trafford contract, could decide to stay at the club.
He added: “He can be the boss. He still has quite a bit of time to go on his contract, so can sit it out if he wants to.
“If I was him, I would dig my heels in and go back. Whether they play him or not is simply another decision the club has to make.
“I have a slight feeling he will still be there at the start of next season. From Manchester United’s, and David’s, point of view I hope so.”
