Canniggia quits Ibrox

Claudio Caniggia has left Rangers after failing to win a new deal.

The Argentinian striker follows Arthur Numan out of the Ibrox exit door having helped the club to the treble this season.

The 36-year-old, who starred for Argentina in the 1990 World Cup and was in the squad for last year’s finals in Japan and Korea, played 78 games for Rangers and scored 21 goals.

The veteran now has a number of offers to consider, including one to play in Qatar.

Director of football business Martin Bain told rangers.co.uk: “Following discussions with Claudio we have decided not to offer him a new contract.

“There is no doubt that Claudio was a great servant to the club and his stylish play was a key ingredient in the success we have achieved in recent times.”

Caniggia came to Scotland to link up with Ivano Bonetti at Dundee and after one season was bought by then Gers boss Dick Advocaat.

He scored in two CIS Insurance Cup final victories for Rangers and scored his final goal on the final day of the league campaign, helping his club clinch the title by thrashing Dunfermline 6-1.

That was his seventh goal against the Pars of the season but he missed out on the clinching of the treble, the 1-0 Tennent’s Scottish Cup final win over Dundee, because of a back injury.

Meanwhile, striker Michael Mols could still stay at the club with a one-year deal in the pipeline.
