Top two could face title decider

Manchester United and Arsenal could do battle in a winner-takes-all Barclaycard Premiership ‘final’ if they cannot be separated at the end of the season.

The FA Premier League published a section of the competition rules on their website, which state if any teams finish level on both goal difference and goals scored, then they would face a decider at a neutral venue.

United currently lead the Premiership by three points after the two sides drew 2-2 at Highbury on Wednesday night, although the Gunners do have a game in hand and a slender advantage on goal difference.

Section B Rule 29 states: “If at the end of the season either the league champions or the clubs to be relegated or the question of qualification for other competitions cannot be determined because two or more clubs are equal on points, goal difference and goals scored, the clubs concerned shall play off one or more deciding league matches on neutral grounds, the format, timing and venue of which shall be determined by the board.”
