Bond strong despite spitting row, says Celtic chief
Celtic chief executive Ian McLeod believes the charity donation of El Hadji Diouf’s club fine will preserve the relationship between Liverpool and Hoops fans.
The Anfield forward will donate two weeks’ wages to charity in consultation with the Glasgow club in response to his behaviour during the UEFA Cup clash at Parkhead on Thursday.
The 22-year-old was caught on camera spitting at Celtic fans towards the end of the 1-1 draw after colliding with an advertising board.
Diouf and his manager Gerard Houllier have both expressed regret at the incident for which the Senegal international has been fined by the Merseysiders.
But McLeod believes the strong bond between the two clubs will remain intact ahead of the quarter-final second leg on Thursday after Diouf’s contribution to charity.
McLeod said: “The substantial charitable donation by Liverpool Football Club is most welcome.
“The incident was very regrettable, and the player has now apologised to all those involved.
“Both Celtic and Liverpool sincerely hope the terrific bond that has evolved between the clubs will continue to flourish for years to come.”
