Gary Neville’s first European goal spared Manchester United’s blushes at Old Trafford tonight.

Swiss minnows Basle looked set for a shock victory when Christian Gimenez volleyed them into a 14th-minute lead.

However, Neville’s deflected strike eight minutes into the second half preserved the home side’s run of just one defeat in 23 Champions League outings.
