Shrewsbury and Chelsea scoreless
Shrewsbury 0, Chelsea 0 (latest)
It took just 30 seconds for Chelsea against Shrewsbury in the fourth round of the FA Cup to launch their first raid.
Boudewijn Zenden cut in from the right and struck a shot which had Ian Dunbavin scrambling across his goal, and the Shrewsbury keeper was relieved to see the ball bounce wide of the post.
Eidur Gudjohnsen should have done better with a clear header from Frank Lampard’s cross then Graeme Le Saux let another chance go begging for Chelsea after Gianfranco Zola had scampered down the right and slid a lovely pass to his team-mate.
Lampard did at least get an effort on target after a quarter of an hour but shot straight at Dunbavin, who was then quick off his line to stop Gudjohnsen putting the visitors ahead.
Shrewsbury’s attacks had been limited to long balls into the box from free-kicks, none of which had led to any opportunities.
But the side with the worst defensive record in the Third Division would just have been pleased to make it beyond 20 minutes on level terms.
