Hearts teenager Graham Weir insists he is not Tynecastle’s new hero after snatching a dramatic derby draw.

Weir admits he is just lucky to be playing in the first team at all.

The youngster came off the bench late in the game to net twice in injury time to deny city rivals Hibernian their first win against Hearts since Bobby Williamson took over as manager.

The Easter Road side looked set to start the new year with three points against their biggest rivals as they surged into a 4-2 lead with just injury time remaining at a rain-soaked Tynecastle.

But Weir had other ideas and his double meant Hibs were forced to settle for a share of the spoils – now he is just hoping he has impressed enough to remain in boss Craig Levein’s plans.

He said: “I’ve had a few starts this season and hopefully I’ll get a few more - the gaffer has given me a vote of confidence by putting me in the side at such a young age and it’s been great for me.

“I’ve never been involved in anything like that before myself although I came on as a substitute in the 2-1 game where Phil Stamp scored the winner in the last minute and that’s the closest I’ve been to something like this before.

“I don’t think that I’m an instant hero in any way – I was just happy to score two goals and now I just hope that continues.”

Goals from Derek Townsley and Tom McManus gave Hibs a two-goal lead within 16 minutes of the game kicking-off but Steven Pressley pulled a goal back from the penalty spot before Mark de Vries levelled for the home side.

Hibs managed to take the lead again through Craig James and when Grant Brebner netted the rebound from a missed Mixu Paatelainen penalty, the three points looked certain to be going to Leith – until Weir weighed in with his perfectly-timed brace.

But he reckons all his team-mates deserve equal credit for battling right to the final whistle to get the result.

He added: “When the game went to 2-2 and I came off the bench, I thought at that point there was only going to be one winner until they went 4-2 up.

“But all credit to our boys because they kept going right to the end. This will probably be my best ever memory but hopefully there will be a few more like that.”

Williamson has suffered cruel disappointment at the hands of Hearts on two other occasions this season – a 5-1 thrashing followed by a last-minute goal from Phil Stamp to hand Hibs defeat once again in their last meeting.

He said: “I’ve said before that this game will never kill me but any more derbies like that and I’ll have to hope that the doctor is on his toes.

“Every derby game you lose hurts you and it isn’t going to make you feel better to win the next one.

“We haven’t suffered defeat today but it was still very disappointing because we defend well against most other clubs in the league and then we give goals away to Hearts, even though we’re made to work for our goals against them.”
